too many statistics lately

Here's how I know I need to stop cramming on statistics: this morning, "California Love" came on, and when I heard "California knows how to party", I thought this:
"Well, okay, so the hypothesis is that California knows how to party better than other states. So the null hypothesis would be that California parties equally with other states, and..." -
and then I stopped in horror.

Candy in her heels tonight, baby

Yes, I know, that's not the real lyric.
Ugh, Blogger won't let me post a link to Yout=Tube content. It's at youtube.com/ watch?v=8C7yj-okjEo - just take out the space between the slash and the rest of the URL.
Anyway, I was on YouTube just now, just browsing, and somehow YouTube recommended a Tiler Peck re-creation of the last dance in Center Stage. So I watched even though I'm weirdly meh about Tiler Peck; she's a good dancer and I know nothing to her discredit, but I just don't get excited about her. Anyway, it got very meta because as it turns out, although Amanda Schull wasn't as good in her technique as Tiler Peck is*, she really was more interesting to watch in this dance. So I guess Amanda Schull : Tiler Peck :: Jody Sawyer : um, still Tiler Peck.
*Because, well, Amanda Schull hadn't even started her apprentice year yet, and Tiler Peck is a principal dancer.

Runaround Sue

If Runaround Sue ran around with every single guy in town already, why does Dion bother to write the song? Wouldn't they all know already?

87 seconds

I've spent a while this afternoon looking at Dylan Marron's Every Single Word project, which is amazing. Go check it out. I'd seen a few clips before but hadn't made time to look at all of it. There were so many clips with no words spoken by people of color at all, and so many with just a couple of lines, that when I got to Juno, 87 seconds of content with a person of color - one who helped to shape the course of the story - felt exciting and expansive.
87 seconds isn't exciting and expansive. 87 seconds in a movie is maybe 2% of the content, probably more like 1.5%. I can't even imagine how it would feel to be an actor of color, trying for roles and knowing how many mainstream Hollywood movies won't even offer a speaking part at all.

go Gamecocks!

While I was checking in on the Mississippi State/South Carolina national championship game for women's basketball, I saw this update on the NCAA website:
"South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley subs outs all five on the floor. Her players deserve the floor time. Mississippi State's head coach Vic Schaefer does the same. Nice, classy moves from these SEC coaches."
I got weepy. Dawn Staley is just the greatest. Both teams had a great tournament, so that was an excellent way to end it.

cozy, warm, and unfashionable

I like this time of year, because for a short time, I can wear cozy clothes such as kneesocks and cardigans. (The rest of the year, I'm too warm to dress like this.) Today I'm all cozy in kneesocks and a long skirt and clogs and a cardigan. I'm amused that a friend told me today that I look like a character from a Jan Brett illustration! She's right.

a few days to re-boot

I'm not recommending sickness as a solution to every problem; even when it's just a cold, as I have, it's not especially fun. But a mild illness like mine, though inconvenient, has proved to be really useful as a way to re-boot. There's something about going back to the most basic needs (such as the hour I spent in bed yesterday cold, in need of a bathroom, and thirsty, but too unwell to work out how to solve any of those problems) that makes more everyday problems move to the back burner.
So after I worked out that getting out of bed would help me solve my problems yesterday, I moved to the couch and since then, being sick has been pleasant. I've been reading (that's almost literally all I did today) and spending time with the rest of the family. I haven't even felt like using the computer, with the exception of half an hour in the evenings.
And yes, I know this makes me sound really privileged, because having a cold isn't really fun for most people, especially if they're immuno-compromised. And believe me, I'll be thinking ruefully of this blog post tomorrow, when I have to work all day. But right this moment, I'm grateful for a cold, and that seemed worthy of note.
